In this version of the classic movie Alice in Wonderland, Mia Wasikowska plays the role of Alice Kingsleigh while Johnny Depp plays the delightfully crazy, Mad Hatter. In addition to these two Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway plays the White Queen. This, I would have to say, is one of my favorite movies. It also has a very good video game for the Wii that I played through three times. That’s beside the point, though.
Directed by Tim Burton, the creator of The Nightmare Before Christmas (another one of my favorite movies), this movie has a creepy setting, in Wonderland at least. The movie follows the casual story line of Alice falling down the Rabbit Hole, but rather than her being in a garden with her sister, she’s being proposed to before she follows the White Rabbit, thus causing her to investigate where he goes, and she falls down the Rabbit Hole.
And once again, following the story line, she ends up in the room with the rather small door after falling. There is a key on a table and a small vial of liquid saying “Drink Me.” Not taking the key, she drinks and shrinks. Once shrunken, she realizes the key is on the table. Sitting against the leg of the table, a small cake appears with the words “Eat Me” on it. Alice eats part of the cake causing her to grow. She then again, this time grabbing the key, drinks the remaining liquid, shrinking once more, and exits through the door finally, truly, in Wonderland.
Alice comes across the characters, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse Mallymkun, Mally for short, the Dodo Bird, and the caterpillar Absolem. Everyone leads Alice to Absolem where he tells her that she must slay the Jabberwocky. At first Alice thinks it’s all a dream until she faces the reality of it all and is about to nearly get her face eaten by the Bandersnatch. That’s when Mally comes to the rescue and takes on of the Bandersnatch’s eyes causing it to run off.
Alice escapes and runs off where she comes across the Cheshire Cat who leads her to the Mad Hatter. At the Hatters, a tea party is going on between him and the March Hare. Alice is forced to drink even more of the liquid as she is shoved inside a tea pot to be unseen by one of the Red Queen’s knights, The Knave of Hearts. The Hatter pulls a riddle on him which aggregates him and makes him leave.
Alice eventually ends up in the Red Queens castle where she escapes with the Bandersnatch. She goes to the White Queens castle where she is restored to her normal size. She then faces truth and accepts her fate as the Champion, slayer of the Jabberwocky. She slays the Jabberwocky and drinks its blood to return home. When home she refuses the proposal from Hamish Ascot and explains the truth behind everyone’s secrets.
That’s how the movie goes. I really love all the special effects that were put into this movie. It really painted a picture. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves creepy twists on classic tales. I know, this movie will always hold a place in my heart. I hope it will for you too. Please watch the movie if you haven’t already.
