Quotes Remembered by our Fandoms by: Ashley Davis

Okay, so who doesn’t love a good read? No one, right? My point has been made! There so many good books out there that it is hard to pick your favorite. It’s even harder to go to the book store and not want to buy every book you see! Dystopian novels seem to be the next big thing trending in the big industry. Books from The Hunger Games (by Suzanne Collins) to The Maze Runner (by James Dashner), we are listing quotes from the books that make every die-hard fangirl (or boy) scream!
(NOTE: If you have not read the books and you are planning to, there may be spoilers ahead!)
1: The Fault In Our Stars by: John Green
“That’s the things about pain, it demands to be felt.”-Augustus Waters
Not only was this a well-remembered quote from John Greens love story The Fault in Our Stars because our beloved Augustus Waters said it but it was well remembered because it played such a large role in the meaning behind the book. Some may not know this (I read it on the internet) but the title actually comes from Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar when Cassius says, “The fault, dear Brutus is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.” It means that it is not fate that dooms us rather than it being our own failings. (Thanks http://www.shmoop.com/fault-in-our-stars/title.html!) This quote was meant to remind us that we cannot contain our pain forever. Eventually we are going to have to face it and deal with it. Thanks to John Green, we have a quote to describe that feeling!
2: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
“They’ll either want to kiss you, kill you, or be you.” –Effie Trinket
Effie, the most fabulous of the capitol citizens, comes back in Mockingjay with the Girl on Fire as a mentor and as a friend. She gives Panem’s hero advice when needed and she encourages her to push forward and take down the capitol to save the world. This quote was remembered because how true could this be? Even in real life, everyone is either going to love you or hate you. That’s just a part of life that you have to deal with and Effie sure figured that one out!
3: The Maze Runner: Death Cure by James Dashner
“Please Tommy, please” -Newt Whitman
This isn’t a life lesson quote like the others so far on this list but it is the quote that broke every fangirl/boys heart while reading the book. This three word quote had so much meaning behind it. After the world turned to a catastrophe and everyone was forced north by the sun flares, a man-made virus (the flare) was leaked. Desperately needing a cure, a group of teenagers memories are wiped and they are forced to face multiple life-or-death situations, including the Maze and the Scorch, all while getting away from those controlling every obstacle. When Newt realizes he was not immune to the flare like his friends and he was becoming sick, he asked the main character, Thomas, to kill him. “Kill me! If you’ve ever been my friend, kill me!” When it came down to it, when Newt was very sick, he begged Thomas to kill him. “Please Tommy, Please.” Finally, Thomas killed him. That single gunshot killed one of our favorite characters and left us in tears while screaming at the pages in the book. At least James Dashner is making it up to us in his next book in the series, “The Fever Code.”
4: Divergent by Veronica Roth
“Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning to control your fears and be free from them. That’s the point.” –Tobias Eaton/Four
What do we remember most about Veronica Roth’s phenomenal book series, “Divergent”? Yes… okay maybe it is seeing Theo James shirtless? No that’s not the point. What we should remember is the amazing story that she brought us about standing up for what’s right and doing what you set your mind to! We all remember the dauntless group that showed fearless behavior because that’s the faction that our main character, Tris, joined. Thankfully, she met Tobias Eaton to show her the ropes. Mr. Only-Four-Fears taught Tris, while teaching us, that being fearless isn’t what is important. What’s important is facing our fears head on and not backing down when it comes to doing something. Words of wisdom from Veronica (and Tobias)!
5: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones By Cassandra Clare
“Regret is such a pointless emotion.”
-Magnus Bane
Regret sucks and I have no doubt that anyone reading this has not experienced regret at some point in their lifetime. All of us has done something that we were not proud of. Some have done things like that more than others. Magnus had a nice understanding of what regret was when he said this because this couldn’t be truer. No one wants to feel regret but I find it awesome that Magnus was probably looking at this from a very different angle. He thinks of it like no one should regret what they do because they can’t change the past. The only way you can move on is to stop worrying about changing what you did. Instead, worry about what you can do to make it better. Regret shouldn’t be the thing that ties us all down. It shouldn’t control us. We need to move on with our lives rather than dwell on the past. Cassandra Clare sure figured that one out!
6: If I Stay by Gayle Forman
“Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you.”
-Denny Hall
Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you. Wow Mia’s dad sure is smart. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive the car wreck that tore Mia’s family apart. This quote did help her make her decision to stay instead of die though, which we do thank Gayle Forman for. It’s funny though because it’s true how sometimes the choices you make can change you as a person whether it be good or bad. Choices vs. Destiny as some like to call it. You make choices sometimes that mean nothing and sometimes you make choices that determine something huge in your life. “If I Stay” was full of choices that determined Mia’s fate. It’s definitely a recommendation to read if you haven’t and it’s a must-see film!
Thanks for going through my list of quotes that each family definitely remember! I’m sure everyone remembers at least one of them, right? These amazing authors really gave us fantastic stories to read through! You can determine which your favorite was!
